Message from the APA California Planning Commission Representative
News for Planning Commissioners
Education and involvement will be key focuses of the APA California Board this year as it looks to better serve Planning Commissioners and Planning Officials throughout California . To that end, board members are in the process of developing this year’s objectives and actions. Ideas under consideration include regional Commissioner workshops on ‘hot topics’ facing planning in the region; specific focused training on regional practices; and a standard “curriculum” for Planning Directors to use with their new commissioners. APA California also wants to further its cooperation with the League of California Cities, complimenting the League’s informative Planner’s Institute. The Institute is seen as a tremendous value to Commissioners and department heads; it is the one venue that focuses three intense days on pertinent training.

Upcoming Events
It is time to think about attending the annual APA California conference this fall. Held in Carlsbad from November 1 - 4, the conference will have sessions dedicated to Planning Commissioners and a host of other informative sessions that address the planning concerns of us all. Beyond California, there are other superb resources offered by the American Planning Association. The American Planning Association has totally revamped The Commissioner, their quarterly publication geared towards Planning Commissioners and departmental staff. Visit www.planning.org to subscribe. The winter issue has a provocative article on “Safe Growth” and cites many resources about mitigating natural hazards, preventing crime through environmental design and making public safety aesthetically pleasing. The issue also has an informative discussion on effective interaction between Commissioners, Planners and Attorneys and a special profile on one of California ’s own: the City of La Mesa ’s Planning Commission. It is well worth the read.
